Pearcey Oration 2019

AI and Ethics

The Pearcey Oration is the most significant technology oration in the country. Each year an internationally respected expert explores our future challenges and opportunities through the lens of digital and electronics technologies and the role they play in our lives and in our economies.

In 2019 we had an entertaining and insightful look at ethics and innovation in an increasingly complex, data-reliant world.

The conflict between the general use of data for the benefit of all society compared to the damage of specific data that can be used against individuals. The challenge of huge data platforms and information-advantage systems and how these business models can be at odds with ethics.

2020 Pearcey Orator: Roger Taylor, Inaugural Chair of the UK government Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation.

Roger has worked as an entrepreneur, a regulator and a writer. He is chair of Ofqual, the qualifications regulator and a member of the advisory panel to Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Probation. His has written two books: God Bless the NHS (Faber & Faber (2014) and Transparency and the Open Society (Policy Press 2016).

Introduced by Dr Elaine Saunders and Dr Greg Adamson.
