Science in the balance: how universities can manage research and education

Join an expert panel discussing the vital role of scientific research and education, and the challenges universities face in delivering both.

As Australia experienced shockwaves from the COVID-19 pandemic, the financial issues facing universities were put in the spotlight.

At the same time, the pandemic highlighted the vital role science plays in developing the knowledge and technology needed to solve global problems.

Universities are central to delivering great science, and in training the scientists of the future, but like any organisation, they have to balance costs and income.

The panel will explore how universities can juggle their two core businesses of education and research, while ensuring they are resilient to financial strain and disruption.

How can we better integrate teaching and research so that investment in either pays dividends in both?

Our panel of experts

  • Professor Duncan Maskell, Vice-Chancellor, University of Melbourne

  • Dr Hayley Bugeja, Senior Lecturer in the School of BioSciences

  • Dr Ashleigh Hood , ARC DECRA Fellow in the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Science

  • Professor Moira O’Bryan, Dean, Faculty of Science
