Spaces that spark creativity, spark innovation
Committee for Melbourne are delighted to present a recording of the Public Libraries: Library Makerspaces E-Room event. This event showcases the innovative use of IT in the public library sector as well as creative community engagement, outreach and partnerships, and takes a look at what it takes to offer successful makerspaces as part of library services.
About this event
During #DIF2022 you can get ringside seats to a showcase of the growing number of Victorian Public Library collaboration spaces known as makerspaces, hackspaces or fablabs.
The Committee for Melbourne and Public Libraries Victoria explore what it takes to create a #makerspace, somewhere that encourages and celebrates hands-on learning, collaboration, and community engagement.
💳 Makerspaces provide space, technology, and equipment to enable library users to create intellectual, artistic, and/or physical materials.
🖨 They give community members access to resources that might not otherwise be accessible or affordable like computers, 3D printers, laser cutters, audio, and video capture and editing tools, as well as traditional arts and craft supplies such as sewing machines and overlockers.
They also foster social connection, encouraging patrons to learn from each other as well as from library staff.
👩🏻🏫 This was one of our most popular events as the annual showcase of both innovative IT use in the public library sector and creative community engagement, outreach, and partnerships.
The event features the following local libraries in:
+ City of Melbourne
+ Hobsons Bay City Council
+ Moonee Valley City Council
+ Wodonga Council

Public Libraries Victoria
Public Libraries Victoria (PLV) is the peak body for public libraries in Victoria, with representation through institutional membership from every public library in the state. The membership works as a progressive alliance to champion the value of public libraries and to make a positive difference in the communities that they serve.
Through information sharing, skills development and the joint delivery of state-wide projects, we are the body behind the places where you learn, create and belong. Here, you can learn about our libraries and the work we do to support them. Read More
There are 291 public library branches, 233 mobile library stops, and 72 other library outlets in Victoria. At the heart of each library is a world of knowledge, potential, and inclusivity. Each is a safe, engaging and empowering place that is open to everyone to enjoy. As well as the physical items in a collection – books, DVDs, magazines, and newspapers – libraries offer access to a range of online resources, software, applications, research and learning tools plus public access computers, and WiFi. With all of that at your fingertips, it’s easy to see how libraries change lives.
Membership is free so find a library near you.
This event was sponsored by the Victorian Government as part of the DIF2022 Festival which runs from 24 August to 7 September. The DIF is an initiative of the State Government of Victoria delivered in collaboration with a network of partners and is open for everyone to get involved.
