Flagship Digital Hub set to drive tech and innovation in Cremorne

23 September 2021 - The DIF Team

The Flagship Digital Hub in Cremorne will be a key driver for Cremorne’s transformation into a world-class technology precinct, developing and attracting talent, creating jobs and stimulating business growth.

The Victorian Government has committed to anchor the ongoing development of Cremorne as a global innovation and technology precinct with support to establish a flagship Digital Hub in Cremorne.

The purpose of the Hub is to drive Cremorne's development into a vibrant, world class centre for technology and innovation. It is envisaged that the Hub will deliver programs and activities aimed at lifting capability, stimulating tech adoption and problem solving, supporting business growth, attracting investment and creating jobs.

It will also build connections with Victoria’s leading technology firms and institutes to businesses, researchers, and education providers across the state, nationally and globally, supported by complementary initiatives such as the recently announced Australian Sports Innovation Centre of Excellence.

The Cremorne Digital Hub Hub benefits and outcomes

The Cremorne Hub will drive a significant uplift in digital capability, workforce skills and innovation across Victorian industries. It will become a key digital infrastructure asset to Victoria, and can drive further value from wider investments in Victoria’s Digital Future Now, including:

  • Digital infrastructure – Access and Affordability

  • Digital Capability – Digital Skills and Capability

  • Innovation – Growth and Productivity

  • Launch Vic – ($40 million) and Victorian Startup Capital Fund ($61M)

The Hub will support the growth of innovative technology businesses, enhance the State’s advanced technology capabilities and create new high-value jobs to meet the technology skills required by every sector in Victoria.

Why Cremorne

Cremorne is a vibrant and diverse inner-Melbourne suburb which continues to grow from its early 19th century roots as a bustling manufacturing centre, into a thriving precinct with 2,000 residents, 700 businesses and more than 10,000 workers.

Today this inner-Melbourne pocket nestled between Richmond and the Yarra River is a driving force behind Victoria’s tech and creative sector.

Cremorne contributes $4 billion to the Victorian economy each year and is home to four of Victoria’s tech companies that have attained billion-dollar valuations – which are headquartered in Cremorne: MYOB, REA Group, Carsales and SEEK.

The establishment of the Digital Hub will accelerate its development as a global innovation and technology precinct, a hub for creative and digital enterprises and startups, and a vibrant precinct in which to live and work.

The Cremorne Digital Hub is part of the Cremorne Place Implementation Plan. The Plan was released in December 2020 and will guide the development of Cremorne as a global innovation and technology precinct.
