Melbourne recrowned as ANZ EdTech hub

16 December 2022 - The DIF Team

This year, Victorian EdTech companies account for more than a third of the EdTech companies in the HolonIQ Australia and New Zealand EdTech 50.

Melbourne continues to add to its list of EdTech credentials, with the release of the HolonIQ Australia and New Zealand EdTech 50 for 2022 highlighting the expanding number of fast growing and innovative learning, teaching and up-skilling startups in Melbourne.

About the HolonIQ EdTech 50

The HolonIQ EdTech 50 is powered by data and insights from HolonIQ, and local market experts in each region. EdTech companies are evaluated and scored based on eligibility and assessment criteria which cover five dimensions:

  1. Market: The quality and relative attractiveness of the specific market in which the company competes.
  2. Product: The quality and uniqueness of the product itself.
  3. Team: The expertise and diversity of the team.
  4. Capital: The financial health of the company and in particular its ability to generate or secure sufficient resources.
  5. Momentum: Positive changes in the size, velocity and impact of the company over time.

What the results tell us

  • Half of this year’s Australia New Zealand EdTech 50 cohort are in the growth years and were founded prior to the pandemic, gaining significant traction over the last three years.
  • While several Victorian companies on the list are in their early growth stages, compared to other EdTech companies across the Australian and New Zealand jurisdictions, they are relatively larger and more mature.
  • Victorian EdTech companies account for 40 per cent of the revenue generated by all the companies in the Australia and New Zealand EdTech 50.
  • Education management systems, which support institutions in their digital processes, dominate the list this year. However, in alignment with predictions around future growth trends in the education-to-employment segment of the EdTech sector that serves adult learners, workforce and talent continues to show steady growth.
